“I would just like to thank you for Josh’s wonderful adventure. He is still telling us about all the fun he had in Colorado. Thank you for providing a safe and fun trip, with professional staff. This was just the kind of summer adventures Andy and I, were looking for Josh.”

“During the rafting section we went over a rapid that looked like a mini waterfall. At first everyone got really scared, but then we got out of our boat and hiked ahead to see what we had to do. The guide talked us through the moves and now we were exited and nervous, especially the people in the front of the raft. We all paddled hard and the rafts went through the right spot in the rapid. We realized that it wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be and it was a team effort that made it fun. It was a big accomplishment!”

“I can undeniably say that the Colorado Discovery trip was one of the most amazing thing I’ve ever done in my entire life. I met some awesome people that taught me to be a more optimistic, better person. The experiences and challenges I was put through always left me with an amazing sense of accomplishment at the end and always left me wanting to push myself to the next step, such as rock climbing majestic mountains or rafting the Arkansas river. This trip is a wonderful choice for a campers first trip alone, and I highly recommend it. AAVE’s teen summer camp really helped me to mature and break out of my shell, and try new adventures. I’m a girl from Florida where the terrain is flat so the mountains and altitude were a change, but a good change. I made some great friends on the trip and I still keep in touch with them and hope to one day see them again. This is a great camp experience and a life changing trip!”

“The report from Erin was excellent. By far this was her best camp experience. she had NO complaints. It was obvious by her reaction that a lot of thought, planning, and effort goes into this program. We highly recommend it and will definitely return for a future trip.”
-Katherine & Brantley Buerger. parents, CD, 2006

“The challenge was the best part for me. Pushing myself as hard as I can and achieving my goals while doing it with best friends was awesome. I loved the campers and counselors–we had a great group and there was nothing unsuccessful about my summer!”
- Erin Buerger

“This trip to Colorado was one of the greatest things I’ve done. One of my Long-term goals was to set out without anyone I know. This summer I accomplished it! The trip made me comfortable because I knew that being with great kids and leaders made the trip that much better. I really enjoyed my summer with AAVE!”

young kids summer camp

Greetings from Colorado~

This is Lucas with ColoDisco 2A. Just wanted to give everyone a quick update on how awesome our trip has been thus far.

After everyone arrived in Denver last Friday, we made our way up to the mountains where my mom, Susy, had prepared a BBQ for all of us. We played a few games, got to know each other a little better, and then loaded up for the drive to Baby Doe Campground outside of Leadville, Colorado.

The next morning, we made our way to the Timberline Lake trailhead. The hike was tough with a lot of steep inclines, river crossings, and an occasional vicious dog who thought it was his job to lick us all to death, and we all made it to the top. Luke, Sammy, Greg, Ruben, and Matt hopped in after the long, hot hike, and pretty much jumped out of the ice-cold water immediately. We had a great lunch, cruised back down the mountain, and played some games before dinner.

On our third day, we took the morning off from vigorous activities and enjoyed the serenity of Turquoise Lake. Jill and Eliana led some great games before lunch and Luke helped keep the group moving as our first Leader of the Day. After lunch, we drove down to Ruby Mountain Campground, which is south of Buena Vista where we set up camp. We then set sail for the Mt. Princeton Hot Springs. Everyone enjoyed a nice, relaxing soak in the hot springs, and the showers that we all had afterwards.

Yesterday we had our first day of climbing. We met our guides- Mike, Ashley, and Cory- and then made our way out into the middle of nowhere, to some of the most beautiful country we could imagine. We realized after roping up that our group, like Lauren and I had previously thought, really are monkeys and we expect that they will return home with tails swinging out of their backsides. Fitz surprised everyone with some amazing rock skills, Hayden fought off an impending rainstorm to nearly summit the days hardest climb, and Ilana wowed us all with some fancy footwork. Taylor led a great meeting with some hot cocoa and cookies after a great mac and cheese dinner.

Today was also spent on the rocks, except now the kids had a chance to belay one another. Faustine and Sahmad, despite being quieter than the other campers, showed solid climbing skills and jumped in at every opportunity to either belay someone else, or do some climbing by themselves.

We are currently sitting down to have our first dinner out- pizza! We travel tomorrow for a few days on the river and then we’re off to our service project. We’ll try to check in when we get a chance.

Also, if you sent something in the mail for your kid, that is awesome. They will be sending out mail either tomorrow or the next day. Our next mail pickup is coming up soon and the kids really love receiving mail (or goodies) from home.

We are having a great time and the group is doing awesome. The next two days are going to be great and the trip only continues to get better after this. You’ll be hearing from us. Take care and take it easy.

Hello Families!

The trip is still going awesome. Every single one of the kids in our group are extremely helpful and all getting along really well. We are celebrating Kaitlyn’s birthday with a Pinata and a cake. Today, we are working with “Aces” on our service project. We are helping to build a fishery and learning about eco-systems.

summer camp in colorado

July 5th, 2006

We celebrated Meredith’s birthday last night for the 4th of July. This morning we woke up and had a beautiful 4 mile hike to Timberline Lake. Everyone did really well, spirits were up, we had a lot of fun and played some games. Now we are playing cards and hanging out in the pouring rain under the tarp. Everyone is really helpful.
