Sail Italy & Greece #2A - Hot but Happy!
Posted by Jenny at AAVE in : General AAVE Trip BLOG, Italy & Greece , add a comment
Greetings from Greece to Abbott and families back home,
Hot, but Happy!
Arrival in Athens was in the midst of the hottest summer in nearly ten years. The temperature was 115! The group is quickly adapting to the heat and realizing that water is indeed more hydrating than coke! Day two we loaded up our styling bus and our driver, Mr. T, led us to Keritena, a remote town in the middle of the Peloponnese peninsula. This was our home for the next 3 days. We were very happy to see a river at the base of our camp. This river, the Alfios, was also where we went rafting and hydrospeeding. Our guides were great and are already greatly missed. Next, Mr. T led us to Olympia where we toured the old Olympic grounds. Then we loaded up the bus again and continued further north to Lefkata Island. We are here for 5 days and how lucky we are. Now we are at diving school and this morning we arrived here, loaded the boats and got to swim with the dolphins! They were literally right underneath us, how lucky are we.
Greetings from the beautiful Mediterranean Sea!

I did the Sail Dive Greece program last July, and I loved it! It was a great next step from summer camp. Thank you, AAVE!

Sail, Dive Greece was amazing, boat 2 was the best, Pieter and Jen were the best, I’d do it 5 times more. I learned so many things and met nice friends.

Multi-water Sport Teen Camp in Greece!

“A summer camp in Greece….amazing! Layne came home very tired and happy with a feeling of accomplishment…that she did it! She hasn’t been away from home before for more than a week, but it didn’t bother her-lots of personal growth there! She’s very proud of her PADI certification and we are thrilled with the whole thing. It was success for her! She’s too old to go next year, wish we would have known about AAVE two years ago, but we’ll definitely recommend it to friends!”

Sail Dive Greece Teen Adventure

Sail Dive Greece….the most glorious water adventure activities trip that AAVE has to offer!
We started off in an extremely remote camp site in the Peleponnese, right on the rushing water of the Alfios River. It was a beautiful day for our first gorge hiking adventure, where we were invited to visit a couple beautiful monasteries as well as some hermit caves (one of which was just recently
abandoned in 1997). Our fabulous guide, Tania, enlightened us with historical facts that put us in the shoes of Greeks seeking independence. Just as the weather turned sour, we hustled across Lousios River by FLYING FOX (or zip line!) We rested up at camp so that we might have the energy for the following day’s activities: white water Hydro Speeding and Monorafting along the Alfios River.
We all survived the day, with great fun….only a few minor bumps and a crab pinch sustained by a trip leader. Some campers showed off their skills: Jim with his accidentally yet impressive Eskimo rolls, and Beth’s perfect decent on monoraft, over a tough class 3 rapid!
Packing up camp and setting out along the switch back roads with expert driving by Labros, we make way to Olympia, ancient birth site of the Olympic Games. Once again, beautiful weather saw us meandering around the ancient site, through marbel stones and pillars…some of us taking a shot at running the 600 ft sprint through the original stadium. (way to go Ari S!) Souvlaki lunch proved to be most enjoyable and campers soaked in the sites of civilization.
Another long bus ride had us arriving at the beautiful Lefkada Island campsite which is currently our home base while we earn PADI scuba certification. We have many happy campers soaking up the beautiful scenery and sun (safely of course!) We’re just waiting to see those dolphins and sea turtles that we’re hearing so much by our expert Australian, Greek, Welsh, and British instructors.
Only 2 more days left here and then we set sail up to Corfu and back down for the next week. Then we finish up with a cultural experience in Athens where we will pay a visit to the ancient Acropolis.
We love it! We love our group and everything about Greece is perfect!!
Yamas/Cheers!
