Aloha!
We just returned from five awe inspiring days in the heart of Big Island, Hawaii. Our gracious hosts, Alberta and Jayson Mock Chew guided us to their taro farm in the Waipio Valley where we learned how to properly load and fit packs under starlight and by tiki torches. The following morning, we awoke to the sunrise and embarked on the infamous Z-Trail which leads to Waimanu Valley via the Kohala Forest Reserve. The Z-Trail holds historical significance in that it was built before the advent of metalworking. Trail builders utilized Stone Age tools and natural resources to devise the trail. The trail has since been widened and modified, though still presents a challenge for those who brave its rigors. Once we reached the top of the Z-Trail, our group steadily traversed the forest reserve to be rewarded with spectacular views of the Waimanu Valley. We set up beachside camp, cooked dinner, and laid our heads down for a well needed rest.
The next day, we trekked to some nearby spectacular waterfalls and cooled down in natural springs feeding from the surrounding mountains. The rest of the day was spent body surfing, mud fighting, and relaxing before the next day’s hike back to the Waipio Valley. Nine miles and a few blisters later, we arrived at Jayson and Alberta’s, tired and sore but happy to have conquered such a challenging hike. On Sunday, we helped Jayson level and smooth a footpath so that the people who live on the far side of the valley can take wheelbarrows and bicycles on it. It was inspiring to see how the Waipio’s inhabitants cared for each other, and we were all happy to be able to help this amazing community. That night, we watched the stars come out while sitting around a campfire, talking and laughing with our hosts and enjoying the amazing Hawaiian feast they had cooked for us. We left the Waipio the next morning and headed back to civilization for burgers, laundry and a final food shop.
We’ll cap off our Hawaii experience with a day of sailing along the Kona coast tomorrow before we say goodbye and head to the airport. It’s been a pleasure spending these three weeks with your children! We know they’ll come home with great stories, wonderful friends, and newfound confidence to driving them to explore.
Aloha,
Jenny, John, Mike, and the UH1C Crew
