Ultimate Hawaii 1B 5 July, 2008

Our trip began with kayaking and snorkeling along the tropical coasts near Kona. The second day our guides put a unique hike together to a freshwater grotto, and snorkeling with green sea turtles. Danny, Sonya, Katie and Jen were stoked to swim with sea turtles for the first time. We spent the fourth of July sailing the amazing Kohala coast with views of Mount Haleakala on Maui. Ben and Jamie were excited to steer our headings while Arnaud, Melissa, and Mary Kate pulled the sheets for us. We watched 3 fireworks displays from a mountain overlook. Today we had our first day of surfing and everyone caught a wave while Evan kept the group together safely in our wait zone.

Aloha!

Wow! Our trip couldn’t have started off any better! On our first day we sailed the clear ocean blue waters of the Pacific aboard the Mailie with Captain Alex and had a blast! We swam with sea turtles, stalked a Manta Ray, and even were able to get in the water and get an up close and personal look with a group of 30 Spinner dolphins! Seriously, a once in a lifetime experience and something none of us will ever forget!
Days 2 and 3 were filled with some totally gnarly waves dude (shocka)! We spent the better part of both days catching some serious surf and enjoying the Hawaiian sun on the beaches with the local surf guides. It has been an amazing time so far as we are now preparing our packs and meals for our 6-day backpacking trip through the gorgeous Waimanu Valley! Luscious flora that can only be found on these islands where the mangoes and guava literally drop from the trees! We can’t wait!
We’ll have some great stories to share when we are out of the backcountry and we will be sure to check in then! Until then… Aloha!

Hi everyone!
Aloha! - as it’s said here. We are doing great and loving the ocean. this island and oh my gosh the other campers here - so fun! We had a relaxing campfire and evening on our first night that helped us all get to know one another and we’re about to head out to take a ride (and paddle) a giant canoe - we can all fit into it! We’ll have to write more later on what it was like - hopefully we’ll have some pictures too! Our leader Chris, is good with his digital camera - Lizz is awesome too!
After the canoe trip we’re heading over to see and bike on (and around?!) some volcanoes!!! Alot of us have never seen a volcano before so this is going to be so exciting.

Gotto go but be sure to check back because we’ll have so many more stories to share!
Aloha!!

Aloha everyone!
What a great island of Kona! We all arrived safely and healthy. We spent the first night around a campfire feeling the ocean breeze, learning all about where all the other campers are from and what the trip is going to be like. It was so fun meeting everyone - especially while sitting on the beach!
We’re off the next day to embark on our kayaking journey int he open water (of course not with out getting trained on the ins and outs of kayaking) - we’re all going to be safe and look out for one another + look out for dolphins and brightly colored fish!!!
We’ll be sure to share some of our knowledge when we get back - right before or maybe after our sail trip - it’ll be neat to meet Dr. Morrigan and hear her expertise! Hopefully we’ll have some pictures to share also! So far, the laughs are flowing easily and we’re having a blast!

We are so excited to be here and everyone arrived safely and happy. The weather is great and the ocean is beautiful We had a nice relaxing campfire last night so that we could sit around and get to know one another. Today, we are off to sail in the clear blue water and learn the ins and outs of what it takes to be a pro-sailer. We’ll check back with you when we are back on land right before we hit the ocean again for some fantastic surfing!

Ultimate Hawaii - truly, the best summer ever!

friends in the summer sun

It seemed as though every day presented a new challenge or a new learning experience - and Taylor embraced them all. She came back exhilarated - truly, the best summer ever. The office personnel have been immediately responsive to any and all questions - even the goofy ones. I wouldn’t hesitate to send Taylor anywhere in the world with AAVE and as far as I can tell from my conversations with her, I imagine I will be!”

Thanks for everything!

Ultimate Hawaii - Happy Camper!

Hey AAVE,

My name is Camille Spalding, and I finished Ultimate Hawaii a few weeks ago. Being on Ultimate Hawaii gave me so much more to take home than I ever imagined it could. The friends I made, the natives I met, the sights I saw, and even some of the food I ate made this trip extremely special to me. Out of everything, however, my trip leaders Ian Saunders and Ally Raber made the trip what is was. They added enthusiasm, spirit, passion, energy, laughter, motivation, and knowledge to every single aspect of the trip. I have been on previous adventure trips, and I know from experience that bad leaders result in bad trips. Well, Ian and Ally made my trip one hundred times more amazing than it ever could have been without them. Ian always had an answer to every single question we had. I’m not gonna lie, many of our questions were pretty stupid, but he put up with it! He taught us how to stake tents so we wouldn’t get rained on, how to open our eyes to different things and opinions, and most importantly, how versatile a sarong is! Without Ian, I couldn’t have survived the trip. He was always there, and taught us so many important values and lessons. And ooh Ally… her smile was not only contagious, but it was CONSTANTLY on her face. I truly admire Ally’s positivity and genuine compassion for each of us. Ally, the junior leader, did everything for the first time, just like us kids; however, it seemed as though she knew exactly what she was doing. Being a native of Hawaii, Ally knew what she was doing! I feel as if I could laugh with Ally like she was my friend rather than my leader. She has so much potential to be an amazing senior leader. I only knew Ally for three weeks, and I feel like she is the big sister I never had. I could go on and on about these two leaders, but I just want you to know that you made no mistake in hiring Ian and Ally. I want to thank you for blessing me with the opportunity to meet them. AAVE gave me an experience that I will never forget.

Aloha from Ultimate Hawaii #2B!

Hello UH#2B Family and Friends!

It’s Ultimate Hawaii 2B writing from the Big Island of Hawaii . We are exploring Kona Town today and buying souvenirs for all of you! We spent the morning on a relaxing beach and tonight we’re headed for the Mauna Kea Observatory to star gaze at one of the world’s premier observatories. The trip has been incredible so far!

Some highlights include: sea kayaking to black sand beaches, bicycling around one of the world’s most active volcanoes (the Kilauea Crater), backpacking to the gorgeous Waimanu Valley, swimming in picturesque waterfalls, surfing the Kona Coast, playing cards, relaxing, and making amazing new friends. We only have 3 days left, but we have just enough time to catch some more waves, learn about outrigger canoeing, and hit the town for our final celebration dinner!!! See you all soon!

Aloha & Mahalo,

Andrew, Allison and the Ultimate Hawaii 2B crew
